Q1: As a young and upcoming artist, what’s the most adventurous or “out-of-the-box” tattoo you’ve had the pleasure of creating?

Paulina: I feel like I get a lot of clients with wacky ideas, which I LOVE. It’s always so fun to create silly pieces for people. One of my favorite crazy ones were two large black flowers on my friend’s shoulders. The whole thing was handpoked and took about 8 hours to line and shade. It’s definitely unconventional but I love the design and am so happy with how it came out! I’m always excited to work with a client’s custom idea, especially if it’s weird.

Q2: How do you infuse your handpoke tattoos with affirmations that resonate with individual clients, especially those from the LGBTQ+ community?

Paulina: As a lesbian tattoo artist, I find it so affirming to work with clients like me. I am always so honored to work with other queer clients to create affirming pieces for them. Tattooing is a powerful way to reclaim power over your own body, and so I always prioritize creating a safe and welcoming space for my clients.

Q3: Being a graphic design student, do you find any interesting cross-pollination between your academic training and your tattoo artistry?

Paulina: It’s actually funny because I’ve found so many tattoo artists who originally were graphic designers! I definitely find myself gravitating towards flatter and more illustrative designs, similar to my graphic design work. I also love integrating design in other aspects of my branding; making shirts, posters, and custom designing my flash to be more recognizable! So far, I’ve designed 3 shirts relating to Almost Tattoos and I’ve been having so much fun with them.

Q4: How do you handle the pressure and expectations of working alongside well-established artist like Master Svietliy?

Paulina: As someone who has been tattooing for about 2 years, I feel so lucky because I get to learn from him every day. I still have a lot to learn, but I feel that he have tremendously helped my journey as a tattoo artist. Master Svietliy taught me many of the basics as I was getting started.
